GUEST EDITORIAL - Sharing Amber's Story!

Cody Farrar of BREAKING GRASS writes this week's editorial column on a subject very dear to him and the band.

Friends,

Brian McNeal, and Prescription Bluegrass, have been gracious enough to provide a platform for me to let you in on the inspiration behind our new song "Fly" (Amber's Song). I'm honored for the opportunity and grateful for all of you who take time to read this.

Our (Breaking Grass) new album "Just As Strong" was recently made available to download on iTunes, Amazon, mountainfever.com, and several other online sites. "JUST AS STRONG" contains a song that holds special meaning to us, and was inspired by a special person we would like you to know about.

"Fly" was written about a young lady by the name of Amber Peeks. Amber battled cancer for the majority of her life. Aside from the shaved head and fragile frame, you would never have known that Amber was sick. She always had a smile on her face; always had a kind word or gesture. She impacted our small, hometown, and everyone in it, in a tremendous way. Everyone who met Amber, loved Amber, and Amber, in turn, loved everyone. We wanted to pay tribute to Amber and penned the song "Fly" in her honor.

The music to the song came first, and then the words. As Amber's condition worsened, more of the words began to come, until it became a goal to have it finished in time for Amber to hear it. By God's grace, the song was finished and roughly recorded, in time for Amber to listen. Breaking Grass was also honored to have Amber's Song played at her homegoing service.

It is our goal, now, to share Amber's story with all who will hear it. Amber was more than a little girl with an incurable disease. She was a role model for us to follow; not just in her sweet spirit, but in her actions during the storm. One story that sticks out in my mind, happened during the latter part of her illness. Amber had many visitors to her home. Family and friends would stop in to check on her, sign her bedroom door, and just say "Hi".  I remember reading on her Facebook page where a young "friend" had stopped in, and had apparently taken money from her piggy bank during the visit. The visitor was quickly reprimanded for stealing by a large number of Amber's online friends. Amber was just as quick in defending her. This was the kind of example she left behind for us to follow. Unconditional forgiveness and understanding. That was/is Amber Peeks.

One way we have found to keep Amber's story alive, is with the Amber Peeks Scholarship Foundation set up at our local community college. Amber's classmates and parents set the fund up to aid others in paying for their education, and to keep Amber's spirit of giving to others alive. We would like to help them achieve this goal. We are donating all of the proceeds from the single download of this song to the Amber Peeks Scholarship Foundation and would urge you to listen to it, download it, and donate as well.
